Here is a brief look at a celebrity’s Human Design chart, focused mainly on Incarnation Cross and Defined Channels. These are just a few of many aspects and layers of a chart. Our purpose here is to give you just a partial glimpse, through Human Design, into this person’s energy dynamics.

Edgar Cayce “The Sleeping Prophet”

Birth info: March 18, 1877, Hopkinsville, KY

Death info: January 3, 1945

[Because Edgar is such a fascinating character, I’m giving more background details than usual.]

BACKGROUND

Edgar Cayce is probably the most well known psychic and medical clairvoyant of modern times. For 40 years of his life, he provided answers to specific questions (particularly for health, diagnosis and treatment issues) as well information on a wide range of topics while in a sleep-like trance state.

He grew up in a large family on a farm, displayed some unusual psychic abilities as a child, and left school after 8^th grade for odd jobs to help the family’s finances.

At age 23, he went into partnership with his father to sell insurance but came down with such severe and persistent laryngitis that he didn’t work for nearly a year, during which he took up photography as an occupation that wouldn’t require much talking.

A traveling stage hypnotist/entertainer heard about Edgar’s condition and offered to help. While Edgar was hypnotized on stage, his voice allegedly returned but disappeared again when he was awakened. A local hypnotist then took on the challenge of helping Edgar restore his voice through a series of hypnotic trances. While in trance, Edgar was able to describe both the cause of his own ailment and its cure.

Edgar was eventually persuaded to offer his trance healings to the public, but only on condition that the readings were free. He discovered that the inquiring person did not have to be present. With only a name and location, Edgar could diagnose the person’s condition (physical and mental) and provide a remedy. News of the accuracy and effectiveness of his trance information spread, and people all over the world began to seek his help.

Throughout his life, Edgar was devoutly religious. He attended church, taught Sunday school, and read the bible annually.  He had a very tough time personally when his readings began revealing information about astrology, reincarnation, and occult knowledge (even information about the lost civilization of Atlantis!), which directly conflicted with his religious beliefs.

He and his family moved to Virginia Beach in 1925, where he continued his free readings, established the Cayce Hospital, and eventually created the nonprofit Association for Research and Enlightenment, which still exists today. In his commitment to help as many people as he could, he took on doing increasing numbers of readings per day, and ended up exhausting himself. He died of a stroke at age 67.

EDGAR’S CHART

While Edgar did not have some of the Gate energies typically found in people with the ability to channel higher consciousness, his chart clearly reflects his spiritual nature and deep commitment to helping people.

For simplicity, we’ll look primarily at his Incarnation Cross and his Defined Channels.

HIS INCARNATION CROSS: CROSS OF THE VESSEL OF LOVE

The Incarnation Cross is a person’s “story” or life path. The Cross of the Vessel of Love is a beautiful path of innocence and unconditional love.

This Cross is composed of the Love of the Spirit (Gate 25), Love of the Flesh (Gate 46), Love of the Self (Gate 10), and Love of Humanity (Gate 15). See a theme here? People with this Cross are givers of unconditional love, and it confuses and pains them deeply to see war, strife, illness, etc. around them. They don’t understand why we can’t all just get along and love and nurture each other! Edgar was an exemplary expression of this energy.

HIS DEFINED CHANNELS

A Defined Channel (colored red, black, red/black checkered, or any combination) is a complete energy in a Chart which connects and defines the two Energy Centers at either end of the Channel.  A Channel always consists of two Gate energies. If one of the Gates is white, then the Channel is not Defined. Defined Channels exert a powerful influence and represent significant themes in a person’s life.  Gates and Channels each have various descriptive names and several meanings.

63-4 Channel of Logic – This is the energy for critical thinking, which begins with questioning (including doubt and suspicion) and the seeking of answers. Edgar spent a lifetime allowing answers to flow through him to people who were seeking those answers. Though his readings defied logic and attracted much skepticism and suspicion, he transcended the naysayers (and his own doubts and reluctance) with the consistent accuracy and tremendous value of the answers he channeled.

29-46 Channel of Discovery – This Channel includes the energy for committing to relationships and work (Gate 29) and appreciation for the body as the temple of the soul (Gate 46). Edgar was so committed to helping people with his unusual gift that he devoted his entire life to it, supported himself and his family primarily from donations for his free readings, and endured the weight of a troubled conscience regarding the blasphemous “information” that came through him. His personal focus was always on the diagnostic readings and remedies, as he deeply wanted to provide relief and healing to those afflicted with mental and physical ailments.

5-15 Channel of Rhythm – This Channel combines rhythm (Gate 5) with the Love of Humanity and diversity (Gate 15). Edgar definitely had a rhythm and ritual for his readings–always lying down, eyes closed, hands folded over stomach, and guided by a hypnotist or facilitator. He accepted everyone, turning away no one, for his readings which he insisted on giving away for free.

OTHER KEY INFORMATION FROM HIS CHART

Edgar’s Open Throat gave him an unlimited capacity to communicate which made it easy for him to allow a channeled source of information to flow through and be expressed verbally by him. It also explains why his voice suffered when he was using it incorrectly (for him) to try to sell insurance.

The other significant energy worth mentioning in his chart is the Gate 25 which appears in his conscious Sun position–the most influential position in the chart. This energy is the Love of Spirit and represents unconditional love and a willingness to transcend the ego in order to connect with Source….something he did nearly every day of his adult life as he submitted himself to a trance state, motivated by his love of people and his deep desire to help as many of them as he could.

While much more could be explained from his Human Design chart, the key points above are enough to show how the life he led was clearly aligned with his inherent Design.
